Claire Milne is the Isle of Man Team Leader for the Intellectual Property & Telecommunications and Technology teams and is a partner in the Corporate & Commercial department at Appleby. She qualified in 1992, joined the firm in 2005 and was made a partner in 2009 after re-qualifying as a Manx advocate. She was previously a partner at Scottish law firm Thorntons for five years.

Claire has experience both in-house and in private practice of all aspects of contentious and non-contentious IP rights across the spectrum and has also dealt with all aspects of commercialisation of IP rights, including licensing of patents to large pharmaceutical companies, domain-name and trade-mark infringement actions. She has also worked on major bespoke software and hardware development projects, especially for the financial services and gaming sectors. Claire specialises in advising online gaming operators, e-business companies and telecoms companies and also advises on data protection and outsourcing issues.

Claire was named as a ‘Leader in her Field’ by Chambers UK 2012. She was also named as a ‘Leader in her Field’ by Chambers Europe 2011 and 2010. Chambers Global 2009 describes Claire as a specialist in matters involving IP and the gaming industry. ‘Her method of working is strong – she can explain the legal points in lay terms very well’. Chambers UK 2011 depicts her as a specialist in IP and e-gaming work and sources call her ‘pragmatic and objective’. Claire was also recommended by the Legal 500 UK 2013.

Claire co-authored the first book on IP for Scottish lawyers called Intellectual Property Law and Practice, published by W. Green and Son, 2004. She has also lectured at the University of Stirling and the University of Dundee and was one of the founding contributors to the University of Edinburgh’s Distance Learning LLM Programme.

Claire has also worked closely with the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission, which is the body that grants licences and regulates e-gaming on the Island. In her capacity as Chair, from September 2007 to July 2012, she was involved in the Government’s working party tasked with delivering the Island’s strategy and preparations for the IMF’s visit in September 2008. She is also a member of the Isle of Man Data Protection Tribunal. She has been accredited by The Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in intellectual property law since 2002.

She has a master’s degree from The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore and is a member of The Law Society of Scotland, a Manx advocate and a Writer to Her Majesty’s Signet. Claire is a member of the Institute of Directors, the Licensing Executive Society and the Society for Computers and the Law.
